Jazz Blue

dolphins sing shallow then low,
surface and blow—

              “it’s instrumental to
                                                          b  r  e  a  t  h  e…”

deep into brass lungs,
once musty, now dried—
bleached, into crisp coral coves
lulled to sleep by suicide notes
             repeated tight on the round…

“oh, but man, the water’s just fine…”

before whaling back
(wild, as buglers can)
coughing lint and sputtering
un-tuned, un-sure, un-til
as once
before
those lips
plump and stick
(true as raspberry saltwater taffy)
to croon that first smooth note
blown
             l             o                    n                    g

and wide as oceans gemmed jazz blue
rippled into songs sung into winds
circling ears and skimming skin singing:

                                    “yeah, that’s my song.”
